A tired-parent walkthrough of every screen in the Nanit app. What is on the main page, how the notification customization actually works, the Night Mode feature that quietly changed the WiFi-monitor game, and where the app still falls down against Miku, Cuboai, and the Owlet Dream App.

The Nanit App, Honestly: Every Feature Walked Through (2026)

WiFi baby monitors live and die by their apps. You can have the best camera in the world, but if the app crashes at 2 a.m. or buries the mute button four screens deep, the camera is not doing its job.

The Nanit app is one of the better ones in the WiFi monitor category. Not perfect. Not the smoothest. Better than most.

I am Barbara, founder of KidzUnderConstruction, and this is the walkthrough I wish someone had handed me before I set up my first Nanit for a consulting client. If you are still deciding whether to buy the camera, my full Nanit Pro review is the piece to read alongside this one.

The main screen: everything you use daily, in one place

Open the Nanit app and the first screen is the live camera feed with a set of quick controls layered on top. This layout is where Nanit genuinely outperforms most of its competitors, and it is worth spending a minute on because you will use these controls hundreds of times.

  • Two-way talk. Tap and hold to speak into the nursery. Release to hear.
  • Background audio toggle. Lets the audio feed keep running when the app is minimized. Turn this on at night. Turn it off when you are in a work meeting.
  • Night light control. Toggles the camera’s built-in soft night light. Useful for middle-of-night diaper changes.
  • Screen capture. Saves a still image of the current feed. Parents use this more than you would expect for milestone photos.
  • Camera settings. Centralized menu for brightness, sound sensitivity, and notification preferences.

The key thing here is the centralization. You are not tapping through three screens to find the mute button.

Compare this to the Cuboai app, which puts almost no controls on the main page and buries the background audio toggle several taps deep. Compare to the Miku app, which does keep common controls on the main page but defaults sound on every time you open the app. If you open the Miku in a meeting to peek at your baby, the audio starts playing over your Zoom call unless you remember to toggle it off first. That is not a small annoyance. That is a design decision I disagree with, and it is one of the reasons I recommend the Nanit over the Miku for parents who use the app during work hours.

The notification settings, where the app quietly earns its price

The Nanit notifications page is where the app moves from good to genuinely useful. Almost every notification type is customizable, which is unusual in the WiFi monitor category.

  • Sound sensitivity. Adjust how loud a noise has to be before the app pings you. Higher sensitivity means more alerts. Lower means fewer, but you might miss softer cries.
  • Movement sensitivity. Same principle, adjusted for how much motion in the crib triggers a notification.
  • Temperature range. Set your acceptable low and high. Nanit will notify you if the nursery drops below or exceeds those values. I set clients to 68 to 72°F per AAP safe sleep guidance.
  • Humidity range. Same, for humidity. 40 to 60% is the range I typically recommend, especially in winter when heating dries the air out.
  • Crib positioning alert. Notifies you if the camera has been bumped or the crib has moved out of the optimal frame. Nice for the third week of use when nobody has looked at the camera angle in a while.
  • Movement zones. Draw a specific area on the video feed and get an alert if your baby moves into it. Useful for climbing-out-of-crib toddler cases.

All of these live in one place under camera settings. This matters more than the marketing suggests. The Miku, by comparison, offers three notification types (movement, sound, awake or asleep) with no customization options. You either accept the defaults or you turn the notifications off entirely.

Emily and Greg Sherman, one of my consulting clients in Lafayette, spent our second session together tuning down their Nanit notification sensitivity by about 40% because Emily was checking her phone 15 times a night. Cutting the sensitivity did not make the monitor less useful. It made her sleep better. That is the kind of small tuning the Nanit app allows and most competitors do not.

Insights, and the Dr. Natalie Barnett layer

Nanit Insights is the paid analytics tier. Roughly $100 a year at the standard level. This is where the app stops being a monitor app and becomes a sleep-tracking product.

  • Sleep summary. Nightly and weekly reports on total sleep, longest stretch, and number of wake-ups.
  • Wake window guidance. Suggested nap and bedtime timing based on age.
  • Sleep tips. Content written by Dr. Natalie Barnett, a pediatric sleep expert who is genuinely well-credentialed and Nanit’s actual head of sleep research. This is not stock content pulled from a template. It is real professional guidance from someone with actual pediatric sleep credentials.
  • Comparative data. How your baby’s sleep compares to Nanit’s aggregated dataset of similar-age babies. Useful for some families, actively harmful for others.

I say “actively harmful” because I have watched this feature spiral parents. Caleb Reyes, a stay-at-home dad I consult with in Fort Collins whose wife Marisol is a pediatric ER doctor, canceled his Insights subscription three months in because comparing his daughter’s nightly sleep to a percentile chart was making him feel like a failing parent. His words: “I was checking a sleep score every morning like a report card and it was making me feel worse.”

Insights is a data product. If you are actively working on a sleep schedule, working with a consultant who wants nap log data, or you love numbers and will use them, subscribe. If you are just going to compare your baby to a chart and spiral, do not.

Night Mode: the feature that quietly closed the gap on traditional monitors

Nanit added a Night Mode feature that I want to spend a moment on, because it addresses the single biggest complaint about WiFi baby monitors versus traditional dedicated units.

The old problem. Traditional dedicated monitors like the Babysense MaxView or the Infant Optics DXR-8 Pro have a physical parent unit whose screen you can leave on all night. Tap awake, glance, set it down. WiFi monitors historically required you to unlock your phone, open the app, and wait for the stream to load every single time. That is a real friction cost at 3 a.m.

The Night Mode fix. Your phone screen dims to near-black but the Nanit app stays active. When you want to check the baby, one tap brings the video feed back up at full brightness. No unlock, no app relaunch, no stream reload. Close to the traditional monitor experience with the video quality advantage of the WiFi camera.

This is the feature I did not expect to matter and now recommend as a setup default. Two families I have coached specifically credited Night Mode with reducing their 3 a.m. check anxiety, because the friction to peek dropped from “unlock, open app, wait, look” to “tap.” The friction was the anxiety multiplier. Reduce the friction, reduce the compulsive checking pattern.

To enable Night Mode: open the app, tap the moon icon in the top-right of the live view. Your screen dims. Tap anywhere to wake it back up. Set your phone next to the bed on charge and it becomes, functionally, a traditional monitor with a nicer picture.

The multi-user layer, and why I like it

The Nanit app supports multiple users on the same camera, with permissions per user. This is underrated.

  • Both parents can have their own logins and their own notification preferences. Emily wants sound alerts, Greg does not. The Nanit handles this cleanly.
  • A caregiver (grandparent, nanny) can be added with limited permissions. They can see the feed but cannot change camera settings.
  • Care logs let multiple caregivers add feeding, diaper, and sleep entries to a shared timeline. If a nanny handles daytime and a parent handles nights, everyone sees the same log without texting each other at midnight.

The Owlet Dream App has similar multi-user support. The Miku app does not really. The Cuboai does but with a more confusing permissions layer. Nanit is the cleanest of the four in my experience across consulting households.

Where the app still falls down

I have been generous so far because the Nanit app is genuinely good. Here is where it is not.

  • Live stream lag on wake-up. When you tap the app to check on a fussing baby, the first 3 to 5 seconds are often a black screen. This is a WiFi monitor category issue, not unique to Nanit, but it is real. The Owlet Dream App has a similar delay. Miku is faster on this specific metric.
  • Firmware push disruption. Twice in the last year, Nanit firmware pushes have briefly disabled families’ live streams for 12 to 24 hours until a reboot cleared it. If you had a bad Nanit night, this is likely why. Set firmware updates to install during the day if the option exists.
  • Background disconnects. Both iOS and Android in aggressive battery-saving mode will suspend the Nanit app in the background. Fix: whitelist Nanit in your phone’s battery settings so it stays active.
  • Alerts route through phone notifications only. There is no in-nursery alarm. If your phone is on silent, you will not hear the alert. Set the Nanit-specific notification volume high or use your phone’s Focus Mode exceptions to let Nanit through Do Not Disturb.
  • Some features require Insights. Alexa integration, Google Home integration, and web streaming via my.nanit.com are all gated behind the paid tier. Free tier gets you the core monitoring layer, which is enough for many families, but the ecosystem features are not free.

How the Nanit app compares to the field

Quick sketch, based on 18 months of watching these apps behave in real client households.

  • Nanit vs Cuboai app. Nanit’s main-screen layout is significantly better. Cuboai buries too many controls. Cuboai’s AI-driven alerts (rollover, face covered) are unique but their notification tuning is not as granular.
  • Nanit vs Miku app. Miku is faster on live stream wake-up but frustrating on the sound-defaults-on issue. Miku’s breathing detection is top of its class (radar-based, no wearable), but the app itself is less customizable.
  • Nanit vs Owlet Dream App. The Owlet app is optimized around the sock and the vital-sign readouts. Nanit is optimized around the video feed and sleep tracking. Different jobs. Both apps have similar lag issues. Owlet’s color-notification system (green, yellow, blue, red) is easier for a sleep-deprived brain to read at 2 a.m. than Nanit’s text notifications.
  • Nanit vs any traditional (non-app) monitor. Night Mode narrows this gap significantly. A dedicated FHSS parent unit is still more reliable for pure “is the baby fine” checking, but you lose the sleep tracking, the multi-user, and the notification customization.

What I set up in the app on day one for consulting clients

If you asked me what to configure the moment you unbox the Nanit, here is the sequence.

  • Create both parent accounts before you set up the camera. Do not add the second parent later.
  • Set the temperature range to 68 to 72°F.
  • Set the humidity range to 40 to 60%.
  • Turn sound sensitivity down to about 60%. You can raise it later if you are missing cries. Most families need less sensitivity than the default.
  • Turn on Night Mode and pin the app to your phone’s dock so it opens in one tap.
  • Whitelist Nanit in your phone’s battery saver and Do Not Disturb exceptions.
  • Skip the Insights trial for the first two weeks unless you are actively working on a schedule. Come back to it once you know what data you want.

That configuration handles roughly 80% of what most families need. Adjust from there once you have lived with the camera for a week.

Buy the monitor once. Set up the app once. Turn off the notifications that do not serve you. That is the version of the Nanit app I would want a tired parent to leave with.
