The twin monitor question is one I get asked at least once a month, and the Nanit version is specific: can you run two Nanit cameras in the same nursery, use the split-screen view, and have it work the way you are hoping it will?
Short version: yes, with notable limitations. Whether those limitations matter depends on what you need the monitor to do.
I am Barbara, founder of KidzUnderConstruction, and over the past 18 months I have consulted with 4 twin families who chose the dual-Nanit setup, plus 3 who tried it and switched to something else. Here is the honest picture.
- Two Nanit Pros means two full camera purchases at $399 each - $798 before stands and accessories.
- One Insights subscription covers both cameras at no extra per-camera cost. That is a meaningful advantage over some competitors.
- Split-screen in the app works, but you lose individual camera controls while in split view.
- Notification volume doubles with two cameras. You will need to tune this aggressively on day one.
- For some twin families, a dedicated FHSS monitor per crib plus one Nanit for sleep tracking is a better setup than two Nanit cameras.
The setup: what two Nanit cameras actually looks like
Each Nanit Pro is a standalone unit. There is no “twin pack” or shared base station. You buy two cameras, two stands (Floor Stand or Wall Mount per crib, depending on your room), and potentially two Breathing Band kits if you are using that feature.
Joon and Tara Park, a Westminster, Colorado couple with 7-month-old identical twins Eli and Noah, set up two Nanit Pros when the boys were 2 months old. Tara is a high school teacher whose schedule means she handles most of the nights; Joon does software. They both wanted independent app access to both cameras simultaneously.
The setup Joon chose: two Wall Mounts, one centered above each crib, both cribs pushed against opposite walls in a 12 x 14 nursery. Single Insights subscription covering both. Tara and Joon on separate app accounts, each seeing both camera feeds.
That setup works cleanly. The overhead camera view from each Nanit is correctly centered. The sleep analytics track each twin separately under their own profile. The subscription covers the full analytics layer for both without additional cost.
Where it became complicated: the Insights notification system.
The notification problem
Two cameras means two motion detection systems, two sound detection systems, two temperature alerts, and two Breathing Band tracking channels if you are using them.
By week 3, Joon and Tara were getting 30-40 app notifications a night between the two cameras. Eli and Noah had different sleep patterns - Noah was waking a full 90 minutes before Eli at the time - and the notification overlap was creating a false impression that both babies were awake simultaneously when usually only one was.
The fix is aggressive sensitivity tuning down on both cameras. I walked Joon through this on a video call: sound sensitivity lowered to 50% on both (from the default 70%), movement sensitivity lowered to 40%, temperature alerts consolidated to a single range rather than separate ranges per camera. After tuning, notifications dropped to 6-8 per night and were meaningful.

Split screen: what it actually does, and what it cannot
The Nanit app supports a split-screen view showing both camera feeds simultaneously on one phone screen. This is the feature twin families ask about most.
It works. The video quality in split view is slightly reduced from the full-screen single-camera view, because you are compressing two streams into half the phone screen each. This is fine for visual monitoring. It is not the view you want if you are trying to see whether a baby’s face is uncovered - the image is small.
What you cannot do in split view:
- Use PTZ (pan-tilt-zoom, the ability to remotely move the camera or zoom in on a specific part of the frame) on either camera. Zoom requires exiting split view, selecting one camera, zooming, then returning to split view.
- Control the night light on one camera independently while watching both.
- Use two-way talk on one camera while monitoring the other.
For Joon and Tara, the practical limitation was zoom. When Noah cried at 2 a.m., Tara wanted to see his face to decide whether to go in. Split view made that image too small. Her actual workflow became: split view to see both at a glance, tap to single view on the waking baby, zoom, decide. That is 3 taps at 2 a.m. compared to 1 on a traditional monitor. She adapted. But it was not as smooth as the marketing suggests.
The cost math for two Nanits
Here is the actual cost over three years for a dual-Nanit twin setup:
- Camera 1: $399
- Camera 2: $399
- Two Wall Mounts: ~$70 combined
- Insights subscription (covers both cameras): $99/yr
- Breathing Band kits x2 (if using): ~$50 combined
Year 1 total: approximately $1,017. Year 3 total: approximately $1,215 after two more subscription years.
Compare that to a hybrid approach I recommend for some families:
- One Nanit Pro for sleep tracking: $399
- One dedicated FHSS video monitor for the second crib (Babysense V43, $120-150; or VTech DM221-2, $80-100): $130 average
- Floor Stands for both: ~$120 combined
- Insights (one camera): $99/yr
Year 1 hybrid total: approximately $748. Year 3 total: approximately $946. Savings: $270 over three years. More importantly, the dedicated monitor for the second crib is more reliable than an app-dependent second camera because FHSS units do not go through WiFi - they maintain signal even when the router has a bad night.
Mary Whitcomb, our clinical contributor, worked with the Adeyemi twin family after their NICU discharge. They had two Owlet socks, two Nanit cameras, and a Snuza - and were drowning in alerts. Mary’s recommendation was to simplify: one Nanit for the overhead view and sleep data, one dedicated sensor-pad unit for the second baby’s baseline monitoring, no wearables. The Petersen twins angle: when two Nanits is the wrong call entirely
Mary handled the Petersen twins, Henry and Eleanor, at Children’s Hospital Colorado. Henry had bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD, a chronic lung condition common in very premature infants that required Henry to come home on supplemental oxygen for 6 weeks). For Henry, a consumer WiFi monitor was not the right tool. He came home with medical-grade cardiorespiratory monitoring arranged through the hospital discharge team.
I am telling this because twin parents with NICU graduates - particularly those born before 34 weeks or with documented respiratory concerns - should talk to their neonatologist or pediatrician before deciding on any consumer monitor, Nanit or otherwise. The Owlet BabySat (prescription-only, FDA-cleared) exists for medically fragile infants who genuinely need pulse oximetry monitoring. A Nanit Pro with a Breathing Band is a consumer wellness device, not a substitute for medical monitoring. Mary is very clear on this distinction.
For healthy full-term or late-preterm twins with no documented respiratory concerns, two Nanit cameras is a reasonable choice. For families with clinical complexity, that conversation belongs with your pediatrician before it belongs with a sleep consultant.
What breaks: the real failure points
Three things go wrong in dual-Nanit setups more often than single-camera setups.
Firmware push disruption hitting both cameras at once. Twice in the 18 months I have been tracking client Nanit setups, firmware updates have disrupted families’ live streams briefly. With one camera, this is a nuisance. With two cameras, it happens to both simultaneously. Both cameras going dark at the same time on a twin family is a different level of disorienting than one camera going dark.
App sluggishness with two simultaneous streams. On older phones or phones with limited RAM, running two live camera streams simultaneously in split view taxes the app more than a single stream. I have had two twin families report the app crashing entirely during split view. Both had phones that were 3+ years old. Newer phones handle it fine.
Breathing Band false alarms doubling. If you are using Breathing Bands on both twins, false alarm rates are additive. One false alarm on a single-camera setup is jarring. Two cameras means two chances for the alarm to fire in the same night. Review the Breathing Band guidance carefully and consider whether both babies genuinely need it, or whether the peace-of-mind case exists for one of them more than the other.
Who I would recommend the dual-Nanit setup for
- Twin families in permanent homes where the overhead view and sleep analytics are primary priorities.
- Parents who are using a sleep consultant and want the analytics data for both babies simultaneously.
- Tech-comfortable parents who will actually tune the notification settings rather than leaving them at default.
And who I would steer toward the hybrid approach:
- Families for whom budget is a real factor.
- Parents who want one camera’s sleep data but do not need two premium cameras to accomplish basic monitoring.
- Twin families with NICU history where clinical guidance has not yet addressed monitor type.
The Nanit Pro is a strong camera. Two of them is a strong twin setup. It is also genuinely expensive, and the split-screen limitations are real. Know what you are buying before it arrives.
