The Nanit Pro is fully cloud-dependent. Unlike the Owlet, it has no offline fallback. Here is what that means for your monitoring setup, and which alternatives actually work without WiFi.
Can the Nanit Work Without Wi-Fi? The Honest Answer (and What to Buy Instead)
The question comes up more than you would expect from families who already own the Nanit. They ask because the router went down, or they are visiting grandparents with spotty internet, or they live somewhere rural where the connection is unreliable, or they have simply decided they do not want cloud video of their baby routing through someone else’s servers every night.
The honest answer is no. The Nanit Pro cannot function without an internet connection in any meaningful way.
I am Dolly, holistic sleep coach at KidzUnderConstruction, and this is one of those situations where I think the clearest thing I can do is tell you exactly what the Nanit does and does not support, and then give you a realistic picture of the alternatives.
- The Nanit has no dedicated parent unit. It only works through the smartphone app.
- The app requires internet access to function - all video routes through Nanit’s cloud servers before reaching your phone.
- There is no BLE fallback, no local parent unit, and no FHSS radio backup. If the internet goes down, monitoring stops.
- This is different from the Owlet Dream Sock, which I covered in a separate piece on how the Owlet works offline - the Owlet has Bluetooth-only mode that maintains basic monitoring without WiFi. The Nanit does not.
- For families who need offline capability or prefer no-cloud monitoring, FHSS monitors (Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum, a technology that broadcasts on a private radio channel between camera and parent unit without using WiFi or the internet at all) are the right category to look at.
What “cloud-dependent” actually means in practice
The Nanit camera streams video to Nanit’s servers. From those servers, the video is sent to your phone via the app. This is how all WiFi baby monitors work - the difference between brands is mostly in which cloud servers they use and how secure the connection is.
What this means on a normal night: you need your home internet working, your phone connected, and Nanit’s servers operational. All three of those things fail occasionally. Nanit’s server outages are rare but they happen. Router reboots happen weekly in many homes. Phones switch to cellular and lose the local WiFi connection mid-stream.
What this means on a bad night: if any of those three things fails while you are expecting the monitor to alert you to something, the alert does not arrive.
I worked with Kira Olson, a homesteader in Bellingham, Washington with 5-month-old twin girls Iris and Wren. Kira runs a small farm with her husband Sam. Their internet connection is functional but not bulletproof - they have rural DSL that drops for 15-30 minutes perhaps twice a week. Kira contacted me after two experiences where she discovered in the morning that the Nanit had been offline for several hours during the night.
Kira’s situation is not extreme. This is a real scenario for rural families, older home wifi setups, and anyone whose router has bad nights.
Her eventual setup was a Babysense V43 as the primary nursery monitor - no WiFi, no internet, FHSS radio between camera and parent unit, 4.3-inch color screen. It works in the barn, in the house, and during DSL outages. She kept the Nanit for daytime viewing on her phone when it was convenient, but it stopped being her nighttime reliability anchor.
The privacy argument
There is a second group of families who ask the offline question not because of reliability but because of privacy. They do not want a live stream of their nursery routing through a third-party company’s servers every night.
This is a reasonable position, and it is worth naming plainly. Every WiFi baby monitor sends your video to a cloud server. That includes Nanit, Owlet Cam, Miku Pro, Cuboai Plus, Eufy S340, and the Google Nest used as a baby monitor. The data security varies by company. Nanit encrypts the stream and has not had a known breach as of my writing this. But the video still leaves your home network.
For families who are not comfortable with that, FHSS monitors are the only category where the video never leaves your home. The signal goes from the camera to the parent unit on a private radio channel. Nanit’s local view feature - meaning the camera streaming to your phone while both are on the same WiFi - might seem like a solution, but the Nanit app still routes through Nanit’s servers even on local networks. It is not a true local-only mode.
The Infant Optics DXR-8 Pro and the Babysense V43 are the two FHSS cameras I recommend most in this category. Both have dedicated parent units. Neither uses WiFi or the internet. The Infant Optics DXR-8 Pro offers interchangeable lenses (wide-angle, optical zoom) which is unusually flexible for a dedicated monitor. The Babysense V43 has a split-screen view for two cameras, which works for families with twins or multiple rooms.
What actually happens if the internet goes out with a Nanit
The camera stays on. The LED indicator light on the camera body will still glow, showing it is powered. The camera itself is fine.
The app on your phone will show a “connecting” or “offline” status. Alerts will not arrive. Live video will not stream. Night Mode will not work. If the Breathing Band triggers an alarm, the in-app alert will not fire because the app cannot receive it.
The camera does not have a nursery-based alarm that sounds in the room. Everything is app-routed. No internet means no monitoring.
This is the fundamental difference from the Owlet Dream Sock’s BLE mode. In BLE-only mode, the Owlet base station still receives the sock’s Bluetooth signal and illuminates its ring light with status colors. You lose the app’s data and remote viewing, but you keep a visual indicator in the nursery and the base station’s audio alert if readings drop out of range. The alternatives I actually recommend for no-WiFi situations
Babysense V43: My first recommendation for families who want reliable, no-internet monitoring. FHSS radio, 4.3-inch color parent unit screen, 720p camera, pan/tilt/zoom, expandable to two cameras for the split-screen view. No app, no subscription, no cloud. Battery life on the parent unit is the main limitation - plan to have it plugged in at the bedside rather than expecting it to run untethered all night. Around $120-150.
Infant Optics DXR-8 Pro: A step up in camera quality. Interchangeable lens system is genuinely useful - the optical zoom lens gives you a closer view without digital degradation. FHSS. No WiFi. No app. Dedicated parent unit with a screen. Around $200-220.
Eufy SpaceView: FHSS, 5-inch parent unit screen, 720p, good night vision, pan/tilt/zoom. Not WiFi, not app-dependent. More affordable than Infant Optics at around $130-160. The SpaceView’s long range (claimed 1000 feet, real-world reliable in any standard home footprint) is a practical advantage for larger houses where signal can be an issue with cheaper monitors.
Snuza Hero: Not a video monitor but worth naming for families whose primary concern is breathing movement, not video. The Snuza clips to the diaper waistband, detects abdominal movement, and sounds an alarm in the nursery if movement stops. No WiFi, no app, no internet. Works during power outages too because it runs on batteries. Around $100-130. I have recommended this for families in very rural or off-grid situations where the priority is a reliable physical alarm rather than any screen.
When to ask me to push back on the no-WiFi preference
There are families who avoid WiFi monitors for reasons that would be resolved differently in my coaching work than by changing the monitor.
If the underlying concern is “I have postpartum anxiety and I know I will check the monitor app constantly and make myself worse” - the right answer is not a FHSS monitor, it is working on the anxiety alongside whatever monitor you use. A FHSS parent unit can cause the same compulsive checking behavior as an app. The screen format changes; the behavior does not.
Eliza Reinhardt, a client in Olympia, was convinced she needed to return her Nanit and buy something simpler. What she actually needed - and what I recognized in the intake call - was mental health support before any sleep coaching or gear decisions happened. I referred her to a perinatal therapist and asked her to wait before making any gear changes. Two months later, with her depression treated, the Nanit she still had was working fine and she was not fixating on the app.
The monitor rarely is the problem when the real issue is parental anxiety. If that resonates, the monitor question may be secondary to a different conversation.
The bottom line for Nanit families considering offline use
If your internet is reliable and your privacy comfort level includes cloud video, the Nanit Pro is a capable WiFi monitor and the question of offline use probably does not matter much in practice.
If you live rurally with unreliable internet, are in a living situation with frequent outages, or prefer no-cloud monitoring, the Nanit is not the right primary monitor for your situation. It was built for stable home WiFi. It works well in that context. It does not have the offline fallback architecture to work anywhere else.
