It matters. It matters more than most sleep sack marketing lets on, because the difference between getting it right and getting it wrong isn’t comfort - it’s safety.

Think of it like a sleeping bag rating for adults. A 15-degree bag doesn’t guarantee you’ll be comfortable at 15 degrees - it’s a starting point that assumes a certain base layer and average thermal tolerance.

The reason TOG matters for safe infant sleep is that babies can’t regulate their body temperature the way adults can, and they can’t kick off a blanket or remove clothing when they’re too hot. An overheated baby cannot self-correct. That’s why the AAP flags overheating as a concern, and why getting TOG right is a safety input, not just a comfort one.

No sleep sack - at any TOG - prevents SIDS. That needs to be said plainly before we get into the numbers.

A few things the chart doesn’t tell you: if your baby runs warm (sweats easily, has damp hair at wake-up, feels hot to the touch on the chest), pull back one level. If your baby runs cold (hands consistently cool, wakes early and seems uncomfortable), add a layer under rather than going up a full TOG. The chart is the framework; your baby’s chest temperature in the morning is the feedback.


The Measurement Problem Nobody Mentions

Most parents set their thermostat to 70°F and assume their baby’s room is 70°F. It often isn’t.

Rooms above a garage run warmer. Rooms in basements run cooler. Nurseries on the north side of the house, or rooms with single-pane windows, drop several degrees below the thermostat setting overnight. Rooms with south-facing windows can be 5-6 degrees warmer than the rest of the house in summer.

Avoid double-layering under a 2.0 TOG unless the room is genuinely cold (below 63°F) - you’ll overheat the baby.

Layering for 2.5 TOG

The 2.5 TOG sleep sack is where most winter sleep sack shoppers end up. At a room temperature of 61-65°F, warm footed pajamas underneath are appropriate. Some parents add a light cotton vest underneath the pajamas in very cold rooms.

Parents in my network report variable results: some see clear improvement in settling and overnight sleep stretches; others see no difference or find the weight uncomfortable for their baby. My position: if you’re considering a weighted sleep sack for a baby under 12 months, discuss it with your pediatrician first. The AAP guidance on weighted products applies here as it does with Dreamland. The weight is lighter, but “lighter than Dreamland” is not the same as “AAP-endorsed.” Talk to your pediatrician.

Where Nested Bean has a clear advantage over Dreamland for TOG purposes: the 2.5 winter version exists, which Dreamland doesn’t offer. If you’re in a cold room (61-65°F) and your pediatrician has cleared a weighted option for your baby over 12 months, the 2.5 Zen Sack fills a gap.

The Woolino option - an unweighted merino wool sleep bag with approximately 1.0 TOG that many parents use from 2 months through 2 years - is worth knowing about as a non-weighted alternative for families who want all-season temperature regulation without the weighted product questions. Merino wool’s natural temperature-regulating properties mean it performs across a wider ambient temperature range than standard cotton or bamboo at a comparable TOG.


The Overheating Checklist: What to Look for Each Morning

The AAP identifies overheating as a risk factor in the sleep environment. Here’s what I tell clients to check at the morning wake-up:

  • Chest temperature: Warm is fine. Hot or sweaty means too warm.
  • Back of neck: Another reliable spot. Damp hair at the nape of the neck is a clear overheating signal.

Seasonal Swaps vs. Year-Round Systems: What Actually Makes Sense

The sleep sack industry would like you to buy a different sack for every season. That’s four to six products per size, and you’ll burn through two or three sizes before your child is done with sleep sacks.

Here’s what I actually do with consulting clients:

A 1.0 TOG sack with adjustable underlayers covers most families in climate-controlled homes across most of the year. In a room that stays between 68-72°F year-round, a 1.0 TOG sack is the only sack you need - you adjust from diaper-only in summer to footed pajamas in winter.

If your room genuinely swings between 62°F in January and 76°F in July, you probably need two TOG options: a 0.5 or 1.0 for summer and a 2.0 or 2.5 for winter. That’s two sacks. Not six.

The multi-season all-wool option (Woolino being the main one at scale) covers approximately 61-80°F with layer adjustments, which eliminates the seasonal swap for most families who can tolerate the higher initial cost. If you’re going to spend money on sleep sacks across two years and three sizes, the math often favors the single product that grows and adapts.


The TOG Chart in Practice: Three Real Scenarios

Scenario 1: Family in a climate-controlled apartment in Chicago. Thermostat set to 70°F. Nursery measured at 68°F in January, 72°F in July. Baby is 4 months old.

Recommendation: 1.0 TOG year-round. Footed cotton pajamas in winter. Short-sleeve onesie in summer. Done.

Scenario 2: Family in an older Victorian in Edinburgh. Room thermometer shows 58°F overnight in December, 65°F in March, 70°F in summer.

Recommendation: 3.5 TOG for December through February with warm footed pajamas. 2.0 TOG for spring and fall. 1.0 TOG for summer. Three sacks total per size, which is a legitimate multi-TOG setup for a genuinely cold and variable environment.

Scenario 3: Family in Phoenix with aggressive air conditioning. Nursery measured at 74°F year-round.

The through-line in all three: the room temperature, not the calendar, is what drives the TOG selection.


Sizing, Fit, and When TOG Stops Being the Right Question

TOG tells you about warmth. It doesn’t tell you about fit - and fit matters for safety and function.

A sleep sack that is too large creates excess fabric around the face and neck. The AAP 2022 safe sleep guidelines require a bare crib environment, which extends to wearable blankets that bunch up around a baby’s head. Size up in sleep sacks when the baby’s shoulders are pulling against the armholes - not when there’s extra fabric at the hem.

Sleep sack sizes vary by brand more than most parents expect. Kyte’s size small fits differently than Halo’s size small. If you’re buying based on size on the label without checking the weight and height ranges on the specific product, you’re guessing.

On fit for active babies: the narrow leg construction on some brands (Kyte gets mentioned for this consistently) can restrict movement for babies who roll or move significantly during sleep. A sack that limits a baby’s ability to reposition isn’t a safe sleep upgrade.

When your child outgrows sleep sacks entirely - typically around age 2-3 depending on the child and the brand’s size range - the transition is to a wearable blanket designed for toddlers, or a fitted duvet if your pediatrician and the AAP guidance for that age support it. That’s a separate conversation.

The TOG question is well-defined and solvable. Measure the room, match the TOG, adjust the underlayer, check the chest in the morning. If it’s not working after three nights of adjustment, something in the equation is off - and it’s usually the room temperature measurement or the underlayer, not the sack itself.

That’s the whole system. It doesn’t require six products.
