How We Test: Our Scoring Rubrics & Methodology

Every product we review is scored against a weighted rubric built from real-family testing and verified client data. Here's exactly what we measure, how we weight it, and why.

Why this page exists

Every review on this site includes a weighted scorecard. Each score has a number, a weight, and a one-to-two sentence description of what that number actually means in practice. If you’ve read one of our reviews and wondered where those numbers come from — this is the page.

We don’t score products in a lab. We score them across real families, in real nurseries, over real weeks of use. The families whose stories appear in our reviews are consulting clients who agreed to share their experience. The scores reflect what happened in their homes, not what happened in a controlled environment.


How scoring works

Each product category has its own rubric — a set of weighted criteria that sum to 100%. Every criterion is scored on a 1–10 scale. The overall score is calculated as:

Overall Score = Σ (criterion score × weight percentage) ÷ 10

A product scoring 8/10 on a criterion weighted at 25% contributes 20 points to the overall score. The maximum possible score is 100. We don’t curve, and we don’t grade on a bell curve. A 65 means 65. An 84 means 84.

The weights are not arbitrary. They reflect what matters most to the families we work with — not what manufacturers emphasize in their marketing. Sound quality is weighted higher than features for baby monitors because a parent at 3am needs to hear their baby cry, not track sleep trends. False-alarm rate is weighted 25% for wearable monitors because phantom alerts triggering unnecessary ER visits is the single most common complaint in parent-reported data.


What “hands-on tested” means

Every product labeled “hands-on-tested” was used in at least one client household for a minimum of two weeks, typically four to six. Most products in our core categories (monitors, sleep sacks, mattresses) have been observed across multiple families over months or years of consulting practice.

We also pull from verified parent-reported data — forum discussions, retailer reviews, and community feedback that we’ve cross-referenced against our own observations. When a specific claim comes from a single family, we name them. When it reflects a pattern across many families, we say so.

We don’t accept manufacturer sponsorship. We don’t accept free products in exchange for favorable coverage. Affiliate links are present on review pages and are clearly disclosed — they do not influence scores, recommendations, or editorial positions.


Baby Monitor Rubrics

Baby monitors split into three sub-types, each with its own weight distribution. All three share a core set of criteria, then add sub-type-specific metrics.

Wearable monitors get a fundamentally different weight distribution because the dominant concern is different:

Safety context for all monitor reviews

Every wearable or breathing monitor review on this site explicitly states that the product is a consumer wellness device, not a medical device (unless it is the FDA-cleared Owlet BabySat). We do not claim any consumer product prevents SIDS. We reference FDA classification when relevant. Mary Whitcomb’s reviews include a dedicated Safety Note block; other authors include this framing prominently.

Safety note: Weighted sleep sacks (Dreamland, Nested Bean) carry an AAP caution against weighted infant sleepwear (2022). Reviews of these products present that guidance prominently. Standard swaddles must transition out at the first signs of rolling, typically 8–12 weeks.

Safety note: AAP 50 dB at sleeping baby’s distance is the safety reference. Reviews note whether each device makes it easy or difficult to stay under that ceiling.

Safety note: Newton’s “breathable through the cover” feature is a real engineering quality, but the AAP does not endorse it as SIDS prevention. We flag this honestly. CPSC firmness standard is the safety baseline — a mattress that fails the firmness test is unsafe regardless of brand prestige.

Safety note: Melatonin for children under 3 is particularly controversial — AAP and AASM have cautioned against routine use without pediatrician oversight. Reviews frame melatonin as a pediatrician-supervised intervention, not an over-the-counter sleep aid.


Additional factors noted in every review

These don’t carry weight in the score, but we mention them in the review prose where applicable:

  • Recall history — checked against CPSC.gov and our internal tracking. Any product with an active or past recall gets a prominent callout.
  • HSA/FSA eligibility — drives purchases on its own for products like Miku, Owlet, and Snoo. Mentioned prominently when applicable.
  • EMF levels — niche, but a real audience cares, especially for monitors and wearables near the baby.
  • Repair / replacement parts — what happens when the sock wears out, the battery dies, or the sensor pad needs replacing.
  • Subscription paywall changes — if a brand has historically raised prices or moved features behind paywalls, we note it.
